Spotlight on the ‘Tree House’

img_treehouse

Keweenaw Family Resource Center is designing and constructing an indoor playground for children aged 0-5 that provides opportunities for sensorimotor development, as well as combats common childhood disorders associated with a sedentary lifestyle. They aim to facilitate interactions between parents and children, and to foster imaginative play.

The Tree House will provide a place for a parent and a child to play together in a warm, clean, stimulating environment on any day when there is inclement weather.  The physical space will be approximately 3,000 square feet, located in Red Ridge Plaza on Sharon Avenue in Houghton, MI.  Of that space, approximately 2,500 square feet will be dedicated to the public, and 500 will be reserved for KFRC offices.  In addition to the general play areas, there will be a designated section for infants as well as a for breastfeeding mothers.  The design of the space and planning of play areas is overseen by a committee chaired by Monica Aho, a pediatric physical therapist who is certified as a clinical specialist in pediatric physical therapy from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.  All play areas will be designed to enhance developmental milestones.http://houghtonwinterpark.blogspot.com

This would be a great addition to the community. If you would like to help or donate to the ‘Tree House’ please Call the KFRC at 906-482-9363

Never Shake A Baby

Never Shake a Baby

Never Shake a Baby

Rhys Edwards from the Dial Help Prevention Department and coordinator of the Superior Child Abuse Prevention Council recently presented a, ‘Never Shake a Baby Class ‘ to over 29 middle school students in Houghton County.

The one session lesson teaches the class (which is working towards its baby-sitter certification) the dangers of shaking a baby. Many young children suffer serious injury or die due to violent shaking each year. Shaking causes damage to a baby because they have weak neck muscles that must support their heavy heads and still developing brain. The outer layer of the brain has not developed its protective outer layer, which causes injuries. The space between the brain and the skill is also larger, so the brain can travel farther, gaining more speed before it impacts with the skull. Even a few seconds of shaking can cause serious damage.

The Superior Child Abuse Prevention Council funds the, ‘Never Shake a Baby’ program through Dial Help.

If you would like more information about scheduling a class please contact Dial Help at 482 9077. www.dialhelp.org
